Is Hugging Your Pet Okay?

The answer may surprise you!

Everyone knows that snuggly cuddles are one of the best parts of owning a pet, and everyone wants to scoop their pet up in a hug. There’s nothing better than a little love from your furry or non-furry companions. But does your pet love hugs as much as you do?

Unlike people, animals don’t always understand that a hug is a way to say, “I love you!” Instead, it feels more like their person is holding them in place or trying to keep them from running away.

Scooping your pet up in a hug can be great for you, but it can be a scary experience for them. Being scared can make your pet bite or scratch, because they don’t know how else to react. This is especially important to remember when meeting a new animal. Let them get to know you with a sniff or nuzzle first! Every animal shows affection in a different way, so let them make the first move.

So instead of hugging your pet, you can sit next to them and cuddle. Pet them without making them feel restrained.

You can talk to your pet, or give them treats!

Playing with your pet is a great way to show your pet you love them! All of these things are just as enriching for them as a hug is for you!

Remember that your pet loves you as much as you love them but not always in the same way. There are a million ways to show your pet you love them without squeezing them in a hug!
